Tips for Winter RV storage

As temperatures plummet and snow coats the ground, even the most ambitious of travelers may need to accept that it’s time to retire their recreational vehicle (RV) for the year. Putting away your camper, trailer or motorhome until next year requires a multi-step approach to ensure your vehicle is ready to help you once again embark on journeys and adventures when conditions allow. Pronto Insurance in Palatine, Illinois, is proud to provide guidance.

Seven Steps for Storing Your RV White and Brown Camper Trailer on Brown Field, rv

As you prepare for winter, create a checklist and ensure you take care of your vehicle. Consider the following steps:

  1. Drain plumbing systems—Any water left in pipes and other parts of your RV’s water systems could freeze during winter, potentially causing severe damage and leading to possible mold infestations.
  2. Fortify the exterior—Inspect the roof, walls, seams, windows, doors and access panels of your RV before leaving it in storage for the winter. Be sure to caulk any holes or cracks with the appropriate sealant.
  3. Cover your vehicle—If your RV will be outside in the winter elements, be sure to invest in a cover that can protect it from hail, wind, ice and ultraviolet rays. Also, make sure your tires are covered. Avoid using plastic covers, which can trap moisture.
  4. Conserve batteries—Disconnect and remove batteries from your RV, as the cold temperatures of winter could damage, drain or destroy them.
  5. Keep pests out—Rodents and insects may find your RV a tempting shelter during the winter months. Remove all food and trash from your vehicle and tightly shut all hatches.
  6. Choose the right spot—Don’t just choose any spot to park your RV for the winter. If you can find a covered, locked garage, that may be ideal. If you must store it outside, look for areas sheltered from the wind that don’t have trees nearby.
  7. Reassess insurance—You may be able to save on your RV insurance costs during the winter, as you likely won’t need specific components, such as medical payments coverage. However, you should discuss any in-depth changes with your agent to avoid being underinsured.
